Coaching or Consulting? Let’s Look at Your Needs

“Coaching” (corporate coaching, in particular) is a one-on-one process between an employee and a certified coach where individualized action plans are developed in response to a particular project, organizational challenge, or career need. In a coaching relationship, it’s all about the conversation. In each session, the coach prompts the client to examine the issue, imagine various options, and select an appropriate action plan. In other words, the coach clarifies, the client creates. The coach gently pulls and tugs. The client develops a plan — a plan that makes sense for him or her because they came up with it for themselves, by themselves.

This differs from “consulting” where someone analyzes a situation and then prescribes a solution. While consulting can be effective in certain situations, coaching believes individuals have the resources to identify most solutions — solutions they’re more likely to implement because they created them.

What happens when you hire a coach...

Initially, a contract is established between the coach, the client’s organization, and the employee. Depending upon the need of the employee, the coaching engagement can vary typically between 3-9 months. 60 minute sessions are scheduled every 2-3 weeks. Each session creates a realistic action plan that the employee will implement by the next session. The first agenda item for each coaching session is a review of what has occurred since the previous session. As a result, coaching offers a benefit that most other developmental methods fail to deliver: accountability.
